Car manufacturers are rushing into developing the next generation of hydrogen cars. And one global car maker that has joined the fray is BMW with its BMW hydrogen car. The latest offering from BMW is the BMW Hydrogen 7. This hydrogen car is powered by the dual-fuel internal combustion engine and feature as well the auxiliary based on the UTC Power fuel cell. This car is still in production and development and based on some records, there are only about 20 BMW 7 cars out in the US and another 80 of these are available in other countries.
This sedan from BMW carries a cryogenic tank that is placed in the trunk and this tank has the capability to hold about 18 pounds of hydrogen. There will be hydrogen and fuel doors at the side of the sedan and the intake manifold are located just under the hood and this is the part that feeds the liquid oxygen. A switch will be provided as well in the interior of the Hydrogen 7 and this will be used by the driver in order to switch from gasoline to hydrogen and vice versa. This BMW hydrogen car is expected to run from 17 to 18 miles using just a gallon of gasoline and can run up to 130 miles when using full tank of hydrogen. But the problem with this is the cost of one gallon of hydrogen that can cost around $100. Another BMW hydrogen car is in design stage as well and that’s the BMW H2R.
